Alex Gibney (the man behind Taxi to the Dark Side, Gonzo: The Life & Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and Enron: The Smartest Men in the Room) provides another glimpse into the recent financial criminal shenanigans with his latest well-crafted documentary, Casino Jack and the United States of America. Following the exploits of Jack Abramoff, Gibney's doc complements other recent offerings trying to make sense of our current crises. Perfectly timed for some post-Labor Day Weekend viewing, the sixth season of NBC's The Office hits the shelves today, full of all the cringe-inducing awkward/comic moments the show is noted for - with some nicely played emotional moments to boot! Sadly, the video for "Subtle Sexuality" isn't included... so you'll just have to watch it here:

Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage

I cannot wait to watch this movie. A raw, tough, and un-glorified depiction of a young hoodlum who in prison becomes a dangerous criminal while struggling with self-identity as he doesn't belong to any clan: French, Corsican, or Muslim.

Kick Ass
This mixture between stylized violence, teen comedy, and super hero movie surprised many by being refreshingly well done. Come on down and get it on DVD to enjoy child on grown-up violence in your own home.

The Ghost Writer
A ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan) uncovers secrets that put his own life in jeopardy. Oh, and its directed by Roman "Chinatown/Rosemary's Baby/Manson widower/exiled rapist" Polanski.

Ben Stiller is Roger Greenberg, a spoiled middle-class intellectual-type that director Noah Baumbach depicts so well in his previous efforts like The Squid & The Whale. The movie is meandering but self-aware and works well - balancing Stiller's easy-to-hate character with Greta Gerwig's role as the housekeeper of Greenberg's rich brother and Rhys Ifans as his ex-friend & bandmate.

Chloe
Are erotic thriller's coming back? This steamy thriller puts Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, & Amanda Siegfried in a dangerous love triangle between husband, wife, and hired escort. Who will make it out alive?!

Terribly Happy
Another promising release from Oscilloscope Labs (recently The Messenger, The Maid) - this Danish noir police story draws upon the black humor and bleak atmosphere of the Coen Brothers.

The Bounty Hunter
Gerard Butler is a bounty hunter who's next target is his ex-wife played by Jennifer Aniston. Hilarity ensues!

The Greatest
Not really sure about the plot, but its got Carrie Mulligan so I'll probably watch it.

Hot Tub Time Machine

John Cusack! That awesome guy from the Office! The dude from the Daily Show! Some other guy! These buddies travel back to their 80s heyday thanks to a time-bending hot tub and crude hijinks ensue. Also featuring Crispin Glover & Chevy Chase - which is reason enough to come rent.

The White Ribbon
Michael Haneke (Cache, The Piano Teacher, Code Unknown, all sorts of disturbingly amazing movies from the past twenty years) brings us the story of this pre WW-I German town - with the abused and suppressed children of the villagers at the heart of the mystery.

Creation When he wasn't voicing Iron Man's computer (fun fact!) Paul Bettany was busy portraying the ape-descendant Charles Darwin. This movie illustrates Darwin's struggles to find a balance between his theories on evolution and the relationship with religious, & thus contradictory, wife (Jennifer Connelly).

The Eclipse

A slow-burning Irish mixture of supernatural thriller and family drama dealing with death & loneliness. You know who really liked it? Seth, the man himself who buys the movies here at Waterfront Video.
