A sad week for the film industry. Several notable filmmakers and performers passed away recently.

Arthur Penn (1922-2010)
"Start your shoot with something unimportant and work too fast. You have to inculcate a sense of recklessness in the crew."
First established in the days of live television, Penn transitioned easily to feaure film directing, helming several classics in the 1960's (such as The Miracle Worker, Mickey One, and The Chase) and helped to usher in the New Hollywood movement with Little Big Man, Alice's Restaurant, and the iconic Bonnie & Clyde.

Sally Menke (1953-2010)
A talented editor who cut every one of Tarantino's films, from Reservoir Dogs to Inglourious Basterds.

Eddie Fisher (1928-2010)
A crooner and occasional actor who received a great deal of publicity for his scandal-laden marriages (including to Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor).

Greg Giraldo (1965-2010)
Comedian who appeared on several series (including as a judge on Last Comic Standing) as well as in the documentary Comedian. Also a staple of Comedy Central's Roasts.

Tony Curtis (1925-2010)
A true star and fine actor who began his acting career in the late 40's and continued working right up till his death. A charismatic presence, some of his memorable films include Some Like It Hot, Sweet Smell of Success, and The Defiant Ones - among many others.

Coming Distractions August 10th 2010

Date Night
The two biggest names in NBC comedy are together and just want to have a dinner date. Then a case of mistaken identity throws them into an action packed thrill ride. Just look at Tina's hair.

Death At A Funeral
Chris Rock decided to remake of the most well-received comedy in forever, Frank Oz's British dysfunctional family riot from 2007. This time around, Rock, Danny Glover, Martin Lawrence, Luke Wilson, Zoe Saldana, and others make up the funeral party. And of course, Peter Dinklage is back because he's just the best.

Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage
The chronicle of Geddy Lee, Neil Peart, and Alex Lifeson, the music they made, and the fans that love them. This documentary is getting great reviews - and not just by prog rock geeks.

Triage - Colin Farrell stars as a traumatized war photo-journalist returning home
Helen - a professor's battle with depression starring Ashley Judd
The Good Heart - Director Dagur Kari (Noi Albinoi) teams up w/ Paul Dano

Coming Distractions August 3rd 2010

DVDs Coming Out Tuesday - 08/03/10

A Prophet
I cannot wait to watch this movie. A raw, tough, and un-glorified depiction of a young hoodlum who in prison becomes a dangerous criminal while struggling with self-identity as he doesn't belong to any clan: French, Corsican, or Muslim.

This mixture between stylized violence, teen comedy, and super hero movie surprised many by being refreshingly well done. Come on down and get it on DVD to enjoy child on grown-up violence in your own home.

The Ghost Writer
A ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan) uncovers secrets that put his own life in jeopardy. Oh, and its directed by Roman "Chinatown/Rosemary's Baby/Manson widower/exiled rapist" Polanski.
