Green Zone

Director Paul Greengrass (most of The Bourne Series) is back with Matt Damon (all of The Bourne Series) for Green Zone in which Damon plays Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller who, according to the poster, is done following orders. After he discovers faulty intelligence and internal corruption, Officer Miller goes rogue in Iraq in this fast-paced action flick with an pretty solid rating on IMDB - check it out!

The Last Station

Christopher Plummer & Helen Mirren both got nominated for Oscars & Golden Globes for their turns as Mr & Mrs Tolstoy in this historical drama that illustrates the Russian author's struggle to balance fame and wealth with his commitment to a life devoid of material things. Also featuring good ol' Paul Giamatti & James McAvoy.

The Maid (La Nana)

I (Pat) really want to see this Chilean movie that won for Best Foreign Film at Sundance & was nominated at the Golden Globes -- an "intimate, funny, & unpredictable" drama about a maid trying to hold on to her position after having served a family for 23 years. Plus it's being released by my new favorite production company Oscilloscope Laboratories, started by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch who said "It's exactly the kind of film that we want to help get out there."

The Red Desert

Attention Criterion buffs: Michelangelo Antonioni's first color film (1964) also comes out on Tuesday. Antonioni (Le Eclisse, Blow Up, The Passenger) and his muse Monica Vitti bring you "mental breakdown amidst the stale, harsh setting of an industrial wasteland" - sounds like fun, right! Edge of Darkness: Mel Gibson, as detective Craven, investigates the shooting of his daughter. Adapted from the political/cover-up/suspense British mini-series of the same name, without, however, all (or any) of the incestuous insinuations of the original.
Legion: God has lost faith in humanity, so he dispatches his legion of angels to administer some apocalypse on a rural diner.

North Face: Just the trailer for this Alps-climbing thriller made me want to mess my pants. Based on a true story, if that means anything these days.
Daybreakers: 95% of the 2019 population are vampires, but how will they survive on the rapidly dwindling selection of human-food? Ethan Hawke, as a vampire hematologist, must create a renewable source of artificial blood in order to save his starving race.

Coming Distractions May 4th, 2010

Not a giant new release line-up for our first week in May, but we have the much anticipated Nine, an adaptation from the Broadway musical that was adapted from Fellini's 8 1/2 (the # refers to how many movies Fellini had made at that point). Nine was directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) and stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, & Kate Hudson (whew, i'm out of breath just from typing that list)

Leap Year : the ever-endearing Amy Adams has to choose between Matthew Goode & Adam Scott after her desperation to get married sends her to Ireland to investigate a tradition that has women proposing to men on leap day. The Sadie Hawkins of matrimony?


Tetro : a new Coppola film with Vincent Gallo, the man we all love to hate (or have to still love a bit... if you really dug with Buffalo '66, as well as Gallo's soft-plinky guitar albums, before he became so widely known for his questionable behavior and his politics).

Coming Distractions March 6th, 2010

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans: Werner Herzog takes Nicolas Cage to New Orleans, without having ever seen the original Bad Lieutenant. Which, I've heard, is not necessarily a bad thing. This take-off seems to be getting much more positive reviews than the 1992 film which featured Harvey Keitel being generally unsavory.
